Rectifier is the component of the UPS which converts the ac (alternating current) supply to dc (direct current) and provide charging current for battery as well as it also supplies to the inverter. As different UPS have different designs, commonly a separate charger is used. Battery is the power storage section and it is kept charged by any of the means- rectifier or separate charger. Its storage capacity is measured as the number of amperes of current that the battery supplies for an hour that is ampere hour abbreviated as AH. There are number of limiting factors depending upon the application of battery. If the design of the battery calls for short autonomy, the battery is discharged to lower level. In this case if there is need for long autonomy the battery is not allowed to be discharged so far.

Next component is inverter which provides alternating current output to the load, which is in phase with the input mains supply. It is also termed as clean supply due to the number of conversions from ac to dc and from dc to ac as well as because of the filtering involved in it. Static switch switches the load between utility mains supply and inverter. The connection between both of them is seamless and because of this arrangement if inverter experiences the situation of overloading, it will transfer the load to the more resilient mains supply due to its fast over-current detection circuits. Maintenance bypass let the load to be transferred to the utility mains and also to the UPS to be shutdown under controlled conditions. External maintenance bypass helps the UPS to be removed or replaced without causing any interruption to the load.
